Preceptor Training – Procedure

WHEN THE STUDENT ARRIVES
  • The student should arrive at the scheduled clinical site on time.
  • Assure that the student is properly attired in his/her uniform. The student should appear neat and respectable, with their “Paramedic Intern” name badge visible at all times.
  • Orient the student to the clinical site.

Review the student’s Lab Skill Checklist. This checklist identifies which patient care procedures the student has satisfactorily performed in the classroom setting. Please use the checklist to assist you as you determine which procedures are appropriate for the student to perform.

DURING THE CLINICALS
  • The student is to perform the same functions as the preceptor, including daily duties. Student participation is extremely important.
  • The student must demonstrate as many of the learning activities/objectives as possible.
  • Discuss patient history, presentations, etiologies, pharmacological therapies, and treatment plans if appropriate with the student.
  • Review student strengths and weaknesses with the student following an activity if possible. Be sure to make appropriate action plans with the student to address any performance concerns.
AFTER THE CLINICAL SHIFT
  • Complete the Preceptor Evaluation of the Paramedic Student – be sure to include any patient care issues that you encountered with the student and how to resolve those issues.
  • Return all paperwork to the student. If the preceptor is unable to return the paperwork with the student, please make arrangements with the Clinical Coordinator or Program Director to get the paperwork.
