Preceptor Training – Paperwork

The student will provide you with the necessary paperwork required for their clinical rotations. There are several itemized sheets listing skills and complaints. When the students complete an individual skill or assessment they will request you sign the itemized sheet for each skill/assessment they performed.

Example: An 87-year-old man with dementia that comes to the site with chest pain and shortness of breath. He is placed on oxygen and has an IV placed. He is administered two medications. If the student performs all of these tasks he/she will request the preceptor sign for 7 items: geriatric patient assessment, chest pain assessment, dyspnea assessment, altered mental status assessment, IV skill, and 2 medication administration skills.

At the end of the shift, the student will present you with an overall shift evaluation.

  • Preceptor Evaluation of the Paramedic Student
    • Rate student in all 7 categories
    • Use the comment area in each category to provide meaningful feedback
      • What the student does well
      • What the student needs to work on
      • Note any assignments due before the next shift
    • Sign and date
    • Return to the student in a sealed envelope with your name signed across the seal
IS THE PAPERWORK IMPORTANT?

YES!
Please take your time to mark them correctly. They are a learning tool for the student, and honest and thoughtful input is needed.

DOES THE STAFF EVEN LOOK AT IT?

Yes!
Occasionally the school receives a call regarding difficulty with a student, and the evaluations indicated nothing negative!

These forms are used as scoring documents to monitor the student’s progress during the clinical portion of the program.
