Public Notice - Law Enforcement Training Academy Scheduled for Assessment as Part of Program to Achieve Accreditation

The Western Dakota Technical College Law Enforcement Training Academy (WDTC LETA) is scheduled for a web-based assessment as part of a program to achieve accreditation by verifying it meets professional standards. This is normally an on-site assessment, however, due to challenges associated with COVID, the assessment will be conducted remotely.

A team of independent assessors will examine the Law Enforcement Program of WDTC to include policies, procedures, management, and operations. The public is invited to comment as part of a periodic, outside review designed to verify the Academy’s compliance with numerous training academy performance standards. This will be an initial accreditation.

The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA), administers this accreditation program. CALEA requires agencies to comply with state-of-the-art standards in four basic areas: policy and procedures, administration, operations, and support services.

As part of the assessment, WDTC employees and members of the community are invited to offer comments by calling CALEA at (916) 960-6933 on Tues., Aug. 9, 2022, between the hours of 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Telephone comments for the public information session are limited to 10 minutes and must address the agency's ability to comply with CALEA's standards.

Copies of the standards are available for public inspection at Western Dakota Technical College, 800 Mickelson Dr., Rapid City SD 57703.

Anyone wishing to submit written comments about the Training Academy’s ability to comply with the standards for accreditation may send them to the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement, Inc. (CALEA), 13575 Heathcote Boulevard, Suite 320, Gainesville, Virginia, 20155 or though the CALEA website, www.calea.org.

Written comments will also be accepted on behalf of the assessors by Western Dakota Technical College, attn: Peter Ragnone, Program Director, 800 Mickelson Dr., Rapid City SD 57703.

For more information, call Elias Diaz, Accreditation Manager at Western Dakota Technical College, at (605) 718-2937.
